Joining the Association of Spartan South Midlands Match Officials not only guarantees you membership of one of the finest referees’ associations in the country, it also lets everyone know that you are proud to officiate on a Feeder League that is the envy of football enthusiasts nationwide.
The Association is approaching its 25th Anniversary and from its humble beginnings, the membership figure has soared from 75 to this year’s total shown above.
Along with the rest of a very hard-working committee, I believe that every member – from the most experienced to the newest Level 7 – should have an equal say. Here you will find no cliques, rather a comradeship that spans across the years and encourages the young and enthusiastic from whom football will draw its top referees of tomorrow.
One year membership costs just £6, a mere fraction of one match day fee. You can also purchase a League Badge and a League tie to ensure you look smart on match days. All three – membership, badge and tie – can be bought for only £25. In these days of spiralling prices, surely one of the bargains of all time!
So what do you get for your money? Well, this revamped website for a start where you can catch up with all the latest League and Association news as well as a wealth of information about clubs and their contact details. The site is frequently updated by our new Webmaster Jon Want, who is a master of IT skills and innovation. Jon is devoting an enormous amount of his spare time to making the site attractive, newsworthy and user friendly. So please make use of this excellent facility. And don’t miss the Bill Scholes newsletter which appears every week throughout the season with reports on the matches in which you have officiated.
The Association holds three meetings during the season attended by keynote speakers and League officials. You are also given the chance to sample the delights of some of the latest gastronomic snacks at the interval and engage in a raffle with some first class prizes. Recent meetings have welcomed amongst others, the World Cup Final Referee Howard Webb, the Chief Executive of the Premier League, Richard Scudamore and Select Group Referee Mark Halsey, who courageously fought his way back to fitness after an operation for throat cancer.
We also award trophies to clubs whose sportsmanship and hospitality help make refereeing a more satisfying experience. And we have our own Oscars which are awarded to those referees who are deemed to have excelled both on and off the pitch.
The Referees’ Appointments Secretary, Mick Ewen, is a staunch supporter of the Association and urges – indeed, expects – everyone to join. So if you haven’t already done so, DON’T DELAY, SIGN UP TODAY!
