SIX OF THE BEST REQUIRED
Could you be a record breaker???

When I was at school (not so long ago!!) being summoned to the headmaster’s office normally meant the production of a thick leather strap and six of the best administered to warm the palms of my hands on a bitter winter’s day!

As membership secretary and treasurer of this very fine band of football referees, it’s a very different six of the best I am calling for … yes, half a dozen of our amazingly reserved, shy, forgetful or frugal officials who are hiding somewhere in the wings and have forgotten to pay a very modest £6 subscription to have their names added to our membership list.

As at 26 December, our membership stands at 202 members for this season which means we require another SIX names to break last year’s record figure. A glance at the handbook tells me there are more than just a few referees who are missing out on the privilege of being a member of this very august society.

Check the Members Page now. If you’re one of the missing names, please don’t be shy … let’s start the New Year with another record to be proud of.

I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and here’s to a happy, healthy and adventurous 2010!

On a different note, on Christmas Eve, I received another letter from the Imperial College, London thanking the membership once again for their outstanding support for asthma research. Donations received in memory of our former secretary and outstanding referee Carl Couzens now stand at £3,535 and every penny has gone towards the pioneering work being carried out in the laboratory of the college’s Professor Chung.

And the good news is that you have a chance to further increase the fund by joining in the Don Smith quiz night in Luton on Thursday 7th January. See separate article for all the details. Hope to see you there!
